First Congregational United Church of Christ Choir Director and Organist

Job Summary:

The Choir Director will demonstrate excellent musicianship, conducting and communication skills based on significant experience in choral leadership.  The Choir Director will work in conjunction with the pastor and Organist to assist with music selection and to prepare the choir members for weekly and other liturgical performances. 

Qualifications:

• Outstanding musicianship skills and conducting experience to direct a four-part church
choir and the ability to interpret various styles of music and implement them.
• Bachelor’s degree in music performance or conducting is preferred.
• Knowledge of worship tradition and a sufficient liturgical understanding to select
music which is appropriate for worship.
• Ability to work harmoniously with the organist, choir, church staff, musicians, and
volunteers.
• The ability to adapt quickly to unplanned events requiring changes in the music portion
of the church service.
• A reliable and dependable communicator, whose leadership fosters community
building within the choir and is supportive of musicians of all skill levels.
• A person of spiritual depth who understands the power of spiritual life in a community
of faith.

Job Summary:

The Organist will provide a prelude and postlude for Sunday services, lead the congregation in hymns, and provide accompaniment to the choir, soloists, and musicians for the praise of God.  This individual will demonstrate outstanding ability on the pipe organ and the piano. The Organist will work very closely with the pastor and Choir Director and, during the choir’s summer hiatus, take on some of the organizational and communication duties of the Choir Director.  In the event of virtual church services, the Organist will work with our Music Producer to create electronic vocal backing tracks to be distributed to the virtual choir on a weekly basis. 

Qualifications:

• Exceptional keyboard ability to play hymns and anthems to accompany the choir
and/or other musicians in the performance of music. Music degree in Organ
Performance is preferred.
• Knowledge of worship tradition and a sufficient liturgical understanding to select
music which is appropriate for church services.
• Ability to work harmoniously with the Choir Director, choir, church staff, musicians,
and volunteers.
• The ability to adapt quickly to unplanned events requiring changes in the music portion
of the service.
• A reliable and dependable communicator who is sensitive and supportive of the needs
of the church congregation.
• Has experience accompanying church choirs, soloists, and instrumentalists.
• A person of spiritual depth who understands the power of spiritual life in a community
of faith.

Compensation: Salary is commensurate with experience and in line with the level for comparable
