Reading for the week: Luke 9:28-36

Today I am thinking about dust. In a few days, we will hear the familiar words that accompany our years: “Remember that you are dust, and to dust you shall return.”  Is there anything more ordinary than the dust that swirls in front of streaming light and nestles in among the tokens of treasured memories? Those who have taken a rag to the corners of the house cannot help but see a new-fallen coat and the bunnies that scamper underneath.

We are truly fortunate when our eyes are able to see the ordinary transformed into the extraordinary. This Sunday, we will hear the story of the Transfiguration of Jesus and wonder how we may see faces set aglow. We may not be ready for the full revelation of divine light, but we can practice the art of perceiving what is already present to us. The poem Dusting by Marilyn Nelson is a good place to start. Don’t let another wonder pass you by.
